Fall signifies a time of harvest, as we gather and reap the benefits of what we have planted since spring. It is about letting go and receiving, as we say good bye to summer and prepare for a reflective time to come. When lung qi is healthy nasal passages are open, sense of smell is acute, and voice is strong. When weakened, there is nasal congestion, excessive mucus, impaired sense of smell, and weak voice. In this series we will strengthen and cleanse the lungs, creating an improved protective qi mechanism.
Role of the lungs:
The lungs control breathing as they supply oxygenated blood to the organs of the body, and eliminate waste from the cells through expiration. As qi is extracted from the air, the skin becomes moisturized, supple and elastic. Body hair and skin are governed by the lungs, and create an internal protective boundary from the external environment and its pathogens. This boundary is also called wei qi, it flows just under the skin and is part of our immune defense.
The lungs open into the nose and throat, are related to the emotion sadness or grief, the metal element, and houses the corporeal soul (primal urges or animal instinct).
Tips for healthy lungs:
Do Qigong! Learn how to fully circulate your qi and bring awareness through breath.
Reorganize and clean out the closet. Get rid of things that you no longer need, and make room for the new.
Wear a scarf around the neck to ward off the cold.
As the weather cools, start eating cooked foods that are easier to digest to help nourish the body and immune system (ie. soups, stews).
